The sentence is -

As the speed builds, so the car appears to grow around you like some fairground ride, its extremities becoming more and more remote, and even the steering wheel seems to get farther away.

In the above centence what exaclty grows around you? The car or the fairground ride?

I am confused.

If the fairground ride grows around you, what is a fair ground ride?
