Most people cannot imagine their lives without traveling. Some of them prefer to be guided, other choose to discover new places on their own. The last method can be more convenient in light of the freedom that is given to someone who selected a self-guided tour. Although traveling with a group has its advantages such as higher security and guarantees os seeing all the major attractions, I prefer to visit sights on my own.
Visiting the most popular tourist places while traveling is important, of course, but guided excursions do not offer more than that.On these types of tours, people usually see almost every noticeable attraction and learn a great deal of historical facts or amusing stories, but they miss the key point. As for me, the value of traveling is that it gives an ability to feel the culture of another country, to reveal its soul. When I visited New York two years ago, I went sightseeing in the fist place, but it did not give me the essential sense of America. Only after having been lost in the streets of Lower Manhattan and walking into the small italian restaurant for the cup of cacao, I finally got the right feeling of presence of the big city. Of course it is impossible to achieve with a guide. But this is only one of several nuisances people get from traveling with a group.
Another discomfort is caused by other members of the group. Even if somebody happen to find anything worth their attention, people do not have a possibility to stop and take a closer look. Sometimes certain objects, buildings or shops are more necessary to see for others and therefore the pace of a walk varies from person to person. Even on a promenade with my family or close friends we do not agree about the route all the time. So I am less inclined to think that it is possible to reach a consent with strangers.
In conclusion, even though I admit the attractiveness of a guided tour, I tent to think it does not fullfil all the requirements of traveling, such as spiritual satisfaction and convenience. Consequently, I believe that sightseeing in a group of tourists cannot be the best way of traveling and do not give anybody a lot of pleasure. In sum, those who want to spend their holiday time well, should better travel on their own.
