The Serendipitous Birth of Post-it Notes

Do you know the name of these? These are slips of small notes in light yellow color. We can attach them to any paper without glue. Moreover, it is very comfortable and common to use…….. Right, the answer is the Post-it note! I guess that you may already catch the answer although the colors of Post-it notes are varied these days. Not to mention, we could find them easily, especially yellow ones, from our everyday life next to the computer, on the files in the office, and even on the refrigerator at home etc. particularly where we want to organize, discern or write short memos. It is a staple in modern life with myriads of shapes, colors, and sizes. Furthermore, the notes are not just stationery anymore. Interestingly, it is used as even a material of contemporary art. In fact, this widely loved self-stick material was born from a very momentary novel idea. In other words, it was not born from any other prearranged plans. Royston M. Roberts, the author of the book, Serendipity: Accidental Discoveries in Science revealed that sometimes scientific discoveries come from serendipity which means particularly in science, "finding something when looking for something else, thanks to an observant mind.”(Wikipedia) Like what he revealed, the Post-it notes appeared in the world thanks to the serendipity.

There was a man working in the R&D (the research and development) department of the company, 3M. His name was Arthur Fry. He actually studied in a one-room rural schoolhouse. However, he came to study at the in the early 1950s, majoring in Chemical Engineering. In 1953, he began working at 3M though being still an undergraduate. And after 11 years, in 1974, serendipity happened to him on one Sunday. On that day, He was supposed to sing at his church in , for he was a member of choir. To sing hymns for commemorating the Eucharist — which means the Christian ceremony based on the anecdote, Jesus Christ's last meal with the holy bread and grape wine accompanying his disciples — he put each of small notes between certain pages of his hymnbook. That was because he wanted to find the pages where the hymns were located, which he had to sing in order, in the comfortable and quick way. However, unfortunately some of the notes fell on the floor even before he was aware of it. He was embarrassed, but there was no time for him to have the kind of feeling. He had to browse through the book very hastily to catch up with his fellows and sing together.

While he was browsing the hymnbook, suddenly he came up with what another researcher of 3M named Spencer Silver had made in 1970. It was a new adhesive, but it was not quite strong enough to be used as a permanent adhesive. Instead, it was rather durable only for a while. The reason was that "the adhesive is a microsphere type adhesive. It sticks lightly and repositions because the microspheres limit the amount of surface area contact between the adhesive and the substrate."(inventhelp.com). Thus, it had not yet been launched and had just been abandoned for four years. He thought that he could attach small notes temporarily to his hymnal book if using Spencer’s “failed” adhesive during the boring servant. The next day, he started to make book markers which he could detach as well as attach readily with the innovative adhesive. Simultaneously, he tried to design multiple uses of them such as for memos. However, to change his dream into a reality, many experiments had to be still needed.

Since then, lots of trials had been done. And finally, when it had taken almost one year since then, Arthur Fry concluded that he completely removed the flaws of the progressively invented notes. Thus, he showed them to his supervisors. Unlike his expectation, however, the managers were not satisfied with them much and worried at first. That was because they were not sure whether consumers would really need them although they would sell them more expensively than other notes for memos. Furthermore, the notes seemed like a waste to them. Yet they decided to venture out. In 1977, they test-marketed the notes to consumers at four cities in the . Among the cities, the results of two cities were disappointing. On the other hand, the results of other two cities were so surprising. The consumers in the cities were crazy about the products because the stores in the cities had issued free samples to consumers in advance to let them experience the notes. However, the stores of other two cities had not. Soon, 3M supported the development of the notes very enthusiastically. By 1980, the notes were sold finally nationwide in the United States; in 1981 they started to be sold worldwide, for example, in Canada and .

As mentioned above, the Post-it notes came from the serendipity, not from any other intended plans. The Spencer’s adhesive could have been abandoned or forgotten. Or Arthur Fry considered it as nothing even after coming up with it. Unless he had given an observant look to a “tiny” discovery, we would not have seen the Post-it notes these days. In reference to the history of this gorgeous invention, there is a saying by Bruce Barton who was an American author, advertising executive, and politician, "Sometimes when I consider what tremendous consequences come from little things… I am tempted to think that perhaps there are no little things." (yesworld.org )As what Bruce Barton told us, if we look around, give a glance at even tiny things around us, and imagine what would happen next continuously, then someday we will make wonderfully tremendous consequences like what Arthur Fry did before us. We might achieve great feats from the serendipity. Therefore, just remember that there are no “little” things but only things which may blossom buds of big successful consequences. Also, take a positive look at even the things which seem to be useless to you. Lastly, keep the ideas however foolish they appear to be. What happened to Arthur Fry waits for you.

That's all my essay. I did my best but I'm sure there would be a lot of awkward expressions or collocations. So, please help me! Emotion: stick out tongue
