The recent arrest of an LISD assistant principal on drug charges is raising a serious question: Should teachers be subjected to drug testing?

John Snyder, a 46-year-old assistant principal at Memorial Middle School, was charged with possession of marijuana and controlled substance last month. Since then, many concerned parents have been urging LISD officials to conduct drug screens.

According to the LISD policy handbook, only personnel who operate commercial motor vehicles are subjected to drug testing. And it's only before they get hired.

Teachers, on the other hand, are not required to submit drug screens. It is considered a violation of privacy and it may only be required if there is a reasonable suspicion of drug or alcohol abuse.

The cost is also considered one major reason why school officials do not mandate random drug screens.

LISD spends about $25.00 to test each bus driver. It would cost around $25,000 to test every teacher and around $62,500 to test every district employee.
