Governments should spend money on railways rather than roads.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

-----------------------------------------------------

Some people believe that governments should invest on railways rather than roads. I partially concur with this suggestion, but still think that road system also need to be developed.

First of all, railways, as a type of public transport, is the most efficient means of transport. A train with an average six wagons can carry far more passengers than any large bus. Otherwise, if travelling by private vehicles, the same number of people have to drive hundreds of car. Thus, investing on railways could help reduce the use of private cars, that, in turn, mitigate the negative effects of traffic congestion. Another advantages of railways is its huge load volume, which outperforms any kinds of vehicles in transporting heavy goods. With an extended railway system, transportation fee will be significantly decreased. Air pollution can also be resolved owing to the replacement of many heavy trucks, which consume a huge amount of gasoline.

However, the authority should also spend money on roads because railways only can not cover all transportation needs in a country. The investment of railways is sometimes more expensive and less economically beneficial in remote areas where few people and goods are needed to be carried. Further, roads are not only in use for buses, vans, motorbikes but also necessary for ambulances, firefighters, or military services.

In conclusion, spending money on railways is a reasonable strategy; but governments should also develop their road systems to serve other vehicles and essential services in the society.
