Topic: Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school.
Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?
These days, learning foreign languages is becoming more prevalent than ever. Some experts are of the belief that children should learn a foreign language at primary school rather than secondary school while others think that this can put pressure on children. In my opinion, this tendency has more advantages than disadvantages.
On one hand, children’s learning new languages as soon as possible has several advantages. First of all, children feel elated, inspired and excited when they have opportunities to know a new language spoken in the world; therefore, they have motivation and encouragement to discover new things in the horizon of knowledge. My sister is a telling example. Thanks to early access to English when she was seven years old, she likes reading English newspapers, magazines and watching English movies which promotes her curiosity. Secondly, learning a foreign language exerts a positive impact on children’s living skills. Studies have revealed that children learning foreign languages from primary school-period are more likely to be more confident, communicative and are better at solving problems. Last but not least, early learning new languages broadens their minds of different and various cultures around the world. By providing children with the benefits of knowledge foundation and satisfaction of meeting learning demands, children have comprehensive insights of their living environment and even the world.
On the other hand, children who learn a new language from an early age might face several unwanted problems. Firstly, this tendency puts pressure on children. They tend to have peer pressure, anxiety and depression earlier than those who begin learning this at secondary school. For instance, Asian children who study at primary school have to spend three-fourth a day going to school and extra classes and bury themselves in a pile of homework at the end of the day. As a result, hardly do they have enough time to learn extra languages and the incidents of suicidal children because of depression caused by learning are not a rare picture in Asian countries. Secondly, learning foreign languages can make some children forget their mother tongue. Survey has shown that many children have difficulty in communicating, especially expressing their feelings or emotions by virtue of concentrating too much on their learning new languages process.
