Topic: Many parts of the world are losing important resources, such as forests, animals, or clean water. Choose one resource that is disappearing and explain why it needs to be saved.

Many natural resources are crucial for human survival, including forests and their products, animals and clean water. Among them, forests have an increasingly important role for the Earth. However, they are being damaged at an alarming rate that causes huge consequences for our ecosystems. Therefore, protecting forests is an urgent global issue.

Undoubtedly, forests are indispensable for the environment. Firstly, forests provide natural habitats for countless species of animals and plants in the world. The existence of all species, no matter how small they are, is vital for healthy biodiversity, which provides numerous benefits for humanity. One-third of our foods are produced by pollination from bees. Secondly, forests are considered the lung of the planet. They create fresh air as well as absorb carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases produced by human activities. Therefore, they are vital against global climate change. Thirdly, forests help people fight against flooding. Roots of plants are able to absorb flash floods and prevent soil erosion in low-lying areas.

However, in fact, deforestation has been growing all over the world and endangering the ecosystems. According to the United Nations, an estimated number of 13 million hectares of forests have been destroyed each year. Deforestation is breaking biodiversity and put quite a few species endangered. Three-quarters of carnivores including lions, wolves, and bears are in decline due to declining habitats. Loss of large carnivores, as a result, may cause an increase of herbivores they prey on that deteriorates the environment as herbivores graze more. In addition, forest degradation partly contributes to global warming. The act of clearing trees accounts for as much as 30 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, leading to the rise of global temperature and an increase of natural disasters. Last but not least, soil erosion becomes a serious problem in many areas due to the loss of trees. Each year, approximate 860 million tons of valuable topsoil of Costa Rica are lost, causing huge impacts on crop yields and fishery industry of this country.

In conclusion, there is no doubt that forests are an invaluable gift that God gives us. Nevertheless, they are becoming more and more vulnerable and need to be protected from human activities.
