In many countries around the world, life expectancy is increasing.
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this situation and give your own opinion.
Recently, with drastic improvements in the standard of living, the population of various nations worldwide has enjoyed a higher life expectancy. Although this brings some benefits to the economy, it also entails financial and healthcare pressure. These benefits and setbacks, therefore, will be discussed further in the passage, and I will also state why this is a more negative development.
On the one hand, increasing life expectancy is economically beneficial to society to some extent. Until recently, premature death was common because of wars and diseases. Today, however, conflicts become scarce as the political situation is generally stable while the general population is healthier with the introduction of new types of medicine. The rise in one’s life expectancy means that an individual can participate in the workforce for a longer period of time.
On the other hand, as people live longer, the healthcare and welfare systems of many nations are under heavy strain. In order to support the ever-increasing number of elderly people, government resources must be allocated for pension or societal benefits that are financially demanding. Furthermore, the medical system is unable to function properly as it requires a large number of medical staff as well as numerous state-of-the-art equipment in order to take care of the elderly. These problems are further amplified in Western societies, where the younger generation tends to have fewer children because of work pressure. If this continues, then the number of older people will soon outnumber younger ones.
In conclusion, although nations are benefited from some economical aspects, the aging population, created by rising life expectancy will eventually lead to their downfall
