Tourism has increased so much over the last 50 years that it is having a mainly negative impact on local inhabitants and the environment. However, others claim that it is good for the economy.
Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of tourism and give your own opinion.
Over the last few decades, the rise of tourism has led many people to question its detrimental effects on the indigenous population as well as the environment. Yet, some individuals maintain that it is economically beneficial to the country. In this essay, I will discuss both the drawbacks and benefits of tourism and demonstrate why it is more advantageous.
On the one hand, the tourism industry is undoubtedly a direct contributor to the national GDP. In developing nations such as Vietnam, for instance, it accounts for roughly 34% of the government’s revenue. These monetary resources, gained via tourism, could be allocated for other projects that ultimately enhance social welfare. Furthermore, tour operators also provide job opportunities for the populace in rural and remote areas. Until recently, they can hardly make ends meet with farming as it is heavily dependent on climatic conditions. With the establishment of tourism facilities, these impoverished people can immediately find employment through cooperation with tour companies.
On the other hand, mass tourism also entails minor consequences to the environment and the local tradition. Some tour operators in Vietnam, for example, resort to animal exploitation, by using elephants as a means of transportation to satisfy the curiosity of tourists. In addition to this, to meet the demand of tourists, a few historical sites were demolished to establish entertainment centers. However, such cases are extremely scarce and their impacts are insignificant compared to the improvements tourism has made to the economy of many countries.
In conclusion, although a few disadvantages of mass tourism is clear, I firmly believe they are justified for the sake of economical developments.
