Fewer students are studying science at school and university, favouring more computer based subjects instead.

Is this a positive or negative development? What are the reasons for this?

At present, students at school and university have a tendency to choose computer-based subjects over science ones. While this development renders the future workforce more productive, there are various reasons behind it, which will be covered in the passage.

To begin with, as more and more students are equipped with up-to-date computer skills, the quality of the future workforce will drastically improve. It is the productivity of employees that will be further enhanced if they possess computer skills to utilize labor-saving appliances. Moreover, with the rise of automation, employees who have studied computer-based subjects will be better prepared for dramatic changes in the job market. In the future, robotic technology has the potential to replace manual labor in various fields. As a result, the unemployment rate will rise and only those with the ability to operate these robots will be protected against this threat.

The reason for this development is that the job market nowadays is increasingly competitive, consequently, students opt for computer-based subjects in order to gain a competitive edge. Because there is a huge demand for computer-related majors among conglomerates, many students have a firm belief that learning these subjects will enable them to receive high income and satisfactory salary perks. In addition to this, academic institutions make use of marketing strategies to attract students to learn these subjects as it guarantees more profit margin.
In conclusion, this trend, although mainly results from the law of demand and supply in the job market, will raise work performance, benefiting the whole economy.
