The development of tourism contributed to English becoming the most prominent language in the world. Some people think this will lead to English becoming the only language to be spoken globally. What are the advantages and disadvantages of having one language in the world?

Tourism’s improvement helped to propagate English worldwide. However, it has brought about an argument stating that English would surpass other languages. This essay will discuss the benefits and the downsides of this trend.

On the one hand, utilizing English as a global language encourages globalization. This angle can be explained that communicating in English makes it easier for people to travel and work abroad. Thus it facilitates trading connections and technology among countries. Therefore, using English unifies different nations. For instance, the ASEAN selected English as the official language for regional meetings and agreements. Besides, making use of English also promotes tourism. Specifically, local people can understand the tourists’ needs; thus, it is advantageous for the tourists to communicate, book a vehicle or order food. Without the support of English, one country’s economy may not develop efficiently.

On the other hand, using English globally threatens the endangered languages to disappear. Some languages are on the verge of vanishing, for example, Hawaii, Romani or Yiddish, due to the spread of English. In addition, the increase of people teaching English makes them halfway through the process of fading out. English menaces endangered cultures as well since some unique ones may vanish if they are globalized. Furthermore, socializing with English speakers too much may make the locals disregard their regional culture and language.

In conclusion, using a single language as a global one has certain advantages, such as promoting the growth of the economy and stimulating tourism. Nevertheless, it threatens other languages and cultures to die out.
