Write about the following topic.
Some people say that advertising encourages us to buy things that we really do not need. Others say that advertisements tell us about new products that may improve our lives.
Which viewpoint do you agree with?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Advertising is a key part of modern business, it is a creative way adopted by large companies to broadcast their products in hopes to attract customers. Commercials allow us to choose from a variety of items that may be suitable for our needs. Not only it diminishes our quandary of whether to buy a certain commodity but also gives us a benefit of the doubt that it might be tailor-made for us. Even though bulletins are advantageous to us most of the time, they can be highly manipulative and persuade people to buy things that are not necessarily useful to them. I shall elaborate on these views and discuss a few other aspects on this topic in the forthcoming paragraphs.
My views on this topic are strengthened by a few experiences in my personal life. For instance, a couple of months back, I wanted to buy a computer monitor to replace my broken laptop screen but due to budget restraints, it turned out to be an arduous task. However, with the help of relevant adverts, I was able to bargain for a perfect screen without burning a hole in my pocket. Hence, advertisements can be beneficial for us to save money and reduce our dilemma while purchasing any product. Additionally, for individuals who usually are unable to take out time for shopping, it can be highly useful to rely on ads to learn about new products.
In deep contrast to my views (expressed above), there’s also a negative aspect to it. Folks are coaxed to put money into obtaining things that are not of immediate necessity. Moreover, people are exploited to buy things only because of the image of power, success, and glamour associated with them. Furthermore, children are easily influenced by commercials and pester their parents to get them certain products. The ultimate aim of advertising is to subtly convince people to buy things.
Based on the elaborate discussion in the paragraph above, we can conclude that even though ads are lucrative and help humankind in several ways, the negative aspects of it weigh more if the bad marketing is not managed and filtered out.
