Essay & Composition Writing

Please review my writing task 2

Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social problems, as well as practical problems. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement.

Language barriers are regarded as one of the biggest social and practical problems for people living overseas. While I concede that some serious social problems are still occurring in some parts of the world, technology plays an integral role in the reduction of practical issues.

On the one hand, I agree that a foreign language provokes some problems for overseas students at the beginning. Not being able to speak the foreign language proficiently can affect their ability to convey their ideas ranging from school to daily activities, and has difficulty in socializing. For the most salient example, abroad students are usually disregarded by native students when forming a group because of their weak ability to articulate their opinion while discussing or use few excellent words for making a perfect presentation. Furthermore, it can result in the breakdown in understanding between people of different cultures, and invisibly undermine the relationship between them.

On the other hand, not knowing to speak another language is less relevant to social problems because of the innovation of technology in general and smartphones in particular. First, Computer has made it easier for people to look up information and have translations only by one click on it. Second, the travelers will be beneficial from it due to the fact that google map is used for searching for directions to a destination instead of asking local people. Similarly, ordering food does not necessarily need to communicate, they can order via online apps. Finally, smartphones bringing along them will be helpful if they need to communicate with others. Although it has a slow process for conveying, technology has mitigated social unrest and heightened tensions in many parts of the world.

In conclusion, I only partly agree with the statement in question. Not knowing how to use a foreign language can render failure to integrate with society and discriminatory practices in some context. It seems fortunate that technology has eased the number of these issues for better world integration.
