As computers translate quickly and accurately, learning foreign languages is a waste of time?
To what extend do you agree or disagree?
Technology has had a profound effect on language and communication, and the use of computers has enabled us to translate languages easily and with accuracy. Because of this, some people think that studying foreign languages is now wasteful and unimportant. Others, however, myself included, disagree to a great extent.
Those who think that instead of learning and speaking a foreign language, we could rely on computers when translating argue that computers as well as smart phones are now commonly found in our homes and offices and using them to understand each other is convenient. By typing or speaking a word or a phrase over a laptop or mobile phone, people can easily communicate even without knowing each others' dialect. For example, a french man who has never spoken english in his life could talk to an american by using an application or a software in his phone. Evidently, this is a convenient and fast way to communicate.
However, I believe that language is not merely translating one word to another. Language necessitates emotion to convey its meaning thoroughly, and computers are not sentient beings and therefore, incapable of expressing feelings. Statements with deeper meaning cannot be perfectly translated by computers since they need to be spoken with emotion, which only humans can do. For example, a man should learn a foreign language in order to romantically express his thoughts to his lover and so, using computers could result in lost of "personal touch" in his statement. Thus, computers are useless in this regard.
In conclusion, although computers can help people translate words conveniently, I believe studying a foreign language is essential especially in expressing one's emotion.
