According to some specialists, it is preferable for children to get down to learning a new language besides their mother tongue in primary school age rather than secondary one. Despite some obvious disadvantages of this trend, I would argue that these are overshadowed by the advantages.
To commence with, an early start of a foreign language would bring about two major drawbacks. One evident weakness is that it can deter children from learning their mother tongue properly. In particular, exposure to different grammar and pronuciation can put the youngsters in a situation of mixing up multiple languages when communicating. In addition, studying new languages will increase pressure on children and consume too much of their time. At primary level, it is vital that students cultivate and enrich their first language as well as study core subjects such ad maths, literature or history. Therefore, if children are pushed to learn another language, they have to study instead of relaxing and having fun.
However, I believe that learning a second language at primary age would prove to be more significant. Obviously, children are less self-conscious or shy and have a flair for absorbing new things; hence, they learn languages faster and easier compared to their peers who are exposed to languages later in life. Moreover, in the new era of globalisation, being a bilingual or multilingual will benefit you more than being a monolingual concerning studies and work. Youngsters had better embark on a foreign language to master it and get closer to their goals including achieving high salary or travelling to other nations.
In summary, although starting to learn a new language at primary school age can cause stress and delay in children's first language acquisition, I am in opinion that these demerits would be outweighed by the merits regarding quicker language comprehension and more promising future chnaces.
