The novel coronavirus has caused the death of more than one million people across the world. All countries have imposed lockdown in varying limits to prevent the spread of the infection. All means of public transport within and outside the countries have been suspended. Social network sites have been playing a pivotal role during the lockdown.
Apart from helping us to remain in contact with our friends and relations, social network sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are efficiently used by people to create awareness about COVID 19. Philanthropists and community workers are using these sites to connect with their counterparts in different parts of the world to help the poor and those living in remote regions. In the last six months there have been many instances of medical and government aid reaching the affected people after their conditions got widely shared in social network sites. These sites have also led to innocent people suffering in the hands of cyber bullies. In some instances, people see the information regarding their family and financial status they share with their online “friends” only to be misused.
In conclusion, though there are certain drawbacks related social network sites, they are highly helpful during emergency situations such as natural disasters or pandemics.
