The Number of heart transplant recipients has always been far beyond the associated donors. Therefore, thousands of people pass away on the heart transplantation waiting line every year. Producing artificial heart devices has opened up a promising horizon for cardiovascular patients. The main question yet to be answered is: “how does an artificial heart work?”

In the same way as an engine in the body, heart provides the power necessary for all activities. In the first glance, it might seem as if it is nothing but a muscle pumping blood to the vessels. However, the first crew of scientists who started to produce artificial hearts found themselves facing with an intricate machine that had to pump 6000 liters of blood to lungs and the rest of body parts every day. Furthermore, the process by which it supplies energy was undefined.

The First Artificial Heart

In 1982, Paul Winchel designed a preliminary sample of an artificial heart. Nevertheless, it seemed a high-stakes job to implement it in a human body. Eventually, Dr. William Devries, an expert surgeon from the University of Utah, decided to perform such a surgery. He named the device “Jarvik-7”. It was the first-ever machine able to be permanently replaced with an actual heart. The recipient of the transplantation was a 61-year old dentist named Barney Clark. His survival chance, in case of not receiving the transplant, was predicted to be less than 30 days. The surgery was performed successfully and Clark remained alive until 112 days later.

Inclusion Criteria of Artificial Heart Transplantation Surgery

Candidates for artificial heart implantation are usually the most ill patients. In other words, they experience the most severe type of heart failure. The implantation can only be performed when the recipients meet all the following criteria:

  1. The candidate should have reached the most severe stage of heart disease.
  2. Life expectancy should have estimated to be less than 30 days.
  3. There should be no way to receive an actual heart.
  4. There should be no alternative treatment method available.
  5. The candidate chest size should be concordant with the artificial heart size.
