Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer.

What, in your opinion, should be the main function of a university?

My essay:

Nowadays, universities play a significant role in success and having a good job. Some people think that graduates should be skillful and ready for a certain career, while others believe the main function of an educational institution is giving knowledge for its own sake and they are not responsible for graduates’ practical skills. No one knows exactly how a university should be provide, but in this essay, I will say what is the true function of the university in my opinion.

Some students have a particular job in their mind before enrolling in a university and think the university is a unique chance to occupy high positions in society. For example, being a dentist or accountant. For progressing in these majors, you need to pass practical courses beside the knowledge related. The only theory is not enough for these fields and by passing only theory, students cannot be a good experienced workforce (except for theorical scientists). In addition, every experiences and emotions which are resulted from a practical job are not in books.

Also, if the university can prepare their students with skills needed in industries and would be a good communication between educational places and job markets, it is for the university’s own sake. If a good graduate work for a company, maybe the company ask her/him to introduce other persons of that university to work there. As a result of this, the university can convert to a well-known place for training skillful workforces.

Although, these days knowledge is power, but we need to learn to use it in our life. The universities are citadel of learning and should fulfill both practical skills and knowledge relevant to person’s major and purposes.
