How true do you think this statement is?

What measures can governments take to discourage from using their cars?

My essay :

Over the past thirty years, due to the development of technology, the number of car ownership has increased dramatically which results in traffic jams in many cities around the world. From my perspective, I totally agree that private cars have made various metropolises become “one big traffic jam”, therefore, the governments should embrace some workable remedies to address this issue.

To begin with, there is a steady upward in the revenue of automobile sales annually because of the comfort in moving and travelling to other places. Thanks to cars, people not only go anywhere whenever they want instead of waiting for public transports that only appear at specific times, but they can also avoid crowded public transportations such as buses or trains. Notwithstanding, the excessive car ownerships have led to a massive amount of traffic jams every day, especially at peak hour. Particularly, during tourist season or on weekends, there will be lots of cars and vehicles on the roads, causing long lines of stuck traffic. This issue produces serious traffic congestion and unpleasantness for many people.

It is obvious that governments must take measures to alleviate this situation. In other words, governments should encourage people to use more public transportations. To illustrate, the governments can show some major negative impacts of private automobiles on the environment and the atmosphere in order to enhance public awareness of the need of environmental protection. Moreover, they had better improve the quality of public vehicles therefore people may feel more comfortable when being inside them. Governments ought to limit the quantity of passengers allowed on each bus as well. Additionally, if the aforementioned remedies proved ineffective, governments would increase private car’s taxes. Thus, the expensive prices may cause many people to be concerned and careful when buying a car.

In conclusion, the number of “traffic jams” grows day by day and causes significant consequences. Some practical efforts must be implemented to tackle this problem.
