Topic: Topic: The importance of biodiversity is being more widely recognised as increasing numbers of species come under threat. What can be done to maintain biodiversity?

My essay:

Nowadays, the numbers of species which are in danger of dying out have been increasing drastically. As a consequence, biodiversity has been widely considered much more important than ever before. But what can be done to conserve biodiversity? According to my thinking, there are some feasible solutions.

The first approach would be for governments to protect unique species by building more national zoos. Certainly, endangered animals will be well catered for if they live in zoos, so many unique species may not be extinct. However, this approach seems to be too expensive to carry out. Besides, many people might argue that there is no diversity when animals do not live in their natural habitats.

Another conceivable solution would be the loss of deforestation. Clear cutting of forests results in the disappearance of natural habitats of many species. Consequently, these species would die out. Therefore, governments should find a way to not only stop deforestation but also encourage people to recover forests. Nevertheless, deforestation is a taxing and inexorable problem. As the world's population and urbanisation rate have been increasing dramatically, the area of forests all over the world is declining year by year.

The third approach would be for governments to educate people about biodiversity. Once everybody understands thoroughly how important biodiversity is, practical and effective actions will be taken to protect it. Obviously, this measure will have no effects if there is no cooperation between governments and their inhabitants.

Truly, the problem of losing biodiversity cannot be solved overnight. However, the situation will deteriorate seriously unless something is done immediately. I strongly believe that biodiversity can be protected if governments implement these approaches above.
