Overall, there are three stages for the fish to develop from eggs to adult salmon with their environment changing over the course of growth.
Laying on a pebbly riverbed are eggs of a large fish called salmon. These salmon eggs hide among reeds in the upper reaches of the river for approximately five to six months before hatching into baby salmon termed fry, which is three to eight centimeters in length. The fry then migrates downward to the downstream river, where there is fast-flowing current, and lives here for roughly four years.
After reaching the size of 12 to 15 centimeters, the smolt leaves the freshwater habitat to the saltwater and settles there for the longest period of five years before travelling back to their birthplace when reaching 70 – 76 centimeters long to lay eggs, and the cycle starts anew.
