All my childhood was spent in the vicinity of the hospital premises. The “Well Baby” clinic, the giraffe stickers at the clinic corridors and open-air children film at the adjacent playground are some of my early memories. My dad was employed in the township hospital. We resided in the residential quarters. So the environment I grew only developed an affinity, than the fear of a hospital. I started my job in XXX as a Medical Representative after graduating Bachelors in Mathematics. When I look back, the seeds for my career in health care were planted during my early days itself.
A good learning of the job aspects ensured a peaceful life. But, after sometime I realized that the challenge was missing and required a change. I took up the responsibility of Key Accounts Manager in XXXX. I have a strong conviction that I am a self-starter. An instance where my initiatives helped me was, the idea of creating a district level forum between tertiary physicians and cardiologists. The purpose was to create a platform to discuss about the treatment options. It added value to the physicians and initiated patient flow to the cardiologists. It was an example of approaching things differently to win the trust of my customers. As the job required frequent travel, I moved into a convenient residence area. After few weeks of arrival, I came across an incidence that changed my outlook about health care.
My neighbor XXX was a chronic rhinitis patient. I asked him, what medication he was taking? He said, he was prescribed XXX long ago and takes those when he has problems. I was surprised because, XXX was pulled out from XXX due to raising safety concerns. I told him about the drug withdrawal from the market and it would not be possible to buy. He refused to agree with me, and showed me a strip of medicine. Now, I was shocked. The company marketing XXX in XXX had managed to replace the ingredient with ZZZZZ. There was a minor change in the brand name and it was deceptive too, “XXXXX” Actually, “Anil was taking a new drug with the dosing of the withdrawn one.” He was putting his life to danger. Anil was lucky to get away, but not many. I understood the need for spreading awareness. I also thought, "things might change as time progresses".
I got an opportunity to partner with the Cardiologists during “SSSSSSS” programs in my present assignment with LLLLL. As a District Manager, I promote SSSSS to cardiologists. The field experience during the programs was an eye opener; an illustration of doing right things that bring excitement. Staying focused, task oriented and being a team player are some of my strengths. On this occasion, I used cardiovascular risk analysis tests to spread the knowledge about cardiovascular health in my city. In another event, we organized a discussion between cardiologists from India and Europe. They shared their perspectives on improving lifestyle and prudent approach to cardiac health.
I had done community health initiatives as a value addition for the physicians, but why was I inclined? I was encouraged by a remark of Indira Gandhi, the great statesman and politician. To emphasize the importance of questioning in humanity, Indira once said that, the power to question is the basis of all human progress. After Anil’s incidence, I was convinced at a subconscious level about the need. Moreover, wherever I was involved, I sensed life’s purpose. Besides, I understood that time doesn't change anything, only doing does. What if more people lived with healthy hearts? How do we compensate for the loss of productive years due to heart diseases in young people? How can we influence schools to contribute towards health awareness? I am keen to find answers.
I hope to embark on the next stage of my career in Health Economics. I am confident that my experiences in health care, dedication and the ability to learn will help me succeed in the XXXXXXX. I plan to use the multi-cultural learning environment to enrich my personal abilities and network on a global scale. I look forward to engage in this valuable opportunity.
