Learning something new can be a scary experience. One of the hardest things I have ever had to do was learn how to give a shot. I was always afraid of shots, but I decided that giving my children their shots, they can not live without, at home was an important skill that I had to learn. I also thought it would be a good experience so, that when my children, get old enough I could teach them to give their selves shots. What I didn’t realize was that learning to give shots at home would also make me a more confident person. New experiences always make me nervous, and my first lesson was no exeption. After I put my gloves on and got the syringes filled with the medication, and saline and everything was sterilized I waited for the nurse to show up. After a couple of minutes the nurse came over and introduced herself. I began to feel more at ease. The nurse was very patient. After a few more weeks, when I seemed to have caught on finding a vein, I could then start giving my children shots at home. Now I have to concentrate on mastering my new skills on my children. Sooner than I imagined, however, things began to feel”okay”and I was able to give a shot. It was a wonderful feeling no more emergency room visits at two o’clock in the morning. In the end my persistence paid off. Not only did I learn to give shots and conquer my fear of needles, but I also learned to believe in myself.
