Dear Sir or Madam,
Information and communication technologies (ICT) have revolutionized the lives of people and it has greatly impacted society, education, economic, health sector, and industries. ICT has changed the world significantly and it is likely that it will continue to do so in the future. Impressed by these phenomenal developments, I am ambitious to join your MERIT Erasmus Mundus Master of Science in research on “Information and Communication Technologies” in the area of knowledge “Wireless and Optical Communication Systems and Networks” starting in September 2013. My aspiration is to become an expert researcher in the field of Information and communication technologies. I desire in particular to be trained at an advanced level in wireless and optical communication systems and networks. I believe that advanced training in a multi-track research-oriented master program of best quality, offered by MERIT consortium, will help me to accomplish my dream.

The subjects of mathematics and physics have always fascinated me since high school, having enjoyed doing physics and mathematics; finally I succeeded in the engineering entrance test and started my academic career with the study of "Telecommunication Engineering" at MehranUniversity of Engineering & Technology Jamshoro, Pakistan. In May 2012, I graduated with a first-class Bachelor of Engineering degree in Telecommunication Engineering. I always placed among the top students of my class and won merit scholarships for securing top ten position during my undergraduate studies. I also got chance to work as an internee on radar surveillance systems, microwave communication and radio based aircraft aid navigation equipments at Civil Aviation Authority Pakistan.

During my undergraduate studies, I was fascinated by subjects such as electromagnetism, signal processing, wireless, and optical communication systems. I did a lot of experiments and some projects related to these subjects. My major final year research project in undergraduate study proposed a design of emergency roadside telephone network and the aim of this research was to provide a best solution for it that should be feasible to provide emergency assistant to the motorists. This project was given to us by National Highway and Motorway Police Pakistan and I was chosen as the team leader. It was challenging experience for me and it has also taught me skills such as successful leadership, teamwork, research work, and utilization of classroom knowledge in a practical scenario. Now with confidence, I want to proceed with graduate work at participating institutions of MERIT master program to gain a joint higher degree and greater research opportunities in the midst of European culture.

Today, tremendous changes are occurring in the communication networks. Currently, increasing trend is towards migration to the Internet Protocol based networks that are the next generation networks (NGN). NGN is expected to completely reform the present structure of communication systems and access to the Internet. I am interested in research on NGN and I wish to do research onmachine-to-machine (M2M) communication over IP next-generation mobile and wireless networks in my second year research thesis.

A post-graduate education offered by MERIT program based on core courses, concentration courses and independent research is precisely the type of program I want to pursue. In my undergraduate curriculum through several independent study courses, I have become even more self-motivated and have been satisfied to discover that discussion between teacher and student has always helped me develop my best work.

Furthermore, being a graduate of Telecommunication Engineering, the MERIT Erasmus Mundus Masters program is an ideal course as not only it will equip me with the necessary research skills but it will also increase my basic knowledge of ICT. Obtaining admission to this program, jointly offered by five European academic institutions with a global reputation for research, will provide me with the perfect opportunity to acquire professional knowledge of ICT. Moreover, at these institutions, I could develop and explore my research interests, develop and share a unique set of social experiences, and contribute an innovative and informative knowledge to your program.

The combination of my determination and the MERIT Master in ICT will become the keystone for my future career as a researcher for ICT institutes and further it will help me in pursuing a PhD degree. Ensconcing myself in European culture, intellectual environment, and energetic research at European institutions is the chance of a lifetime. I hope to be able to take advantage of it.
