please review my motivation letter

Dear Sirs/Madams,
I am applying to the Hydro Science and Engineering Master program at TU Dresden.

In the early years of Afghanistan’s civil war, my parents immigrated to Iran and I was born there. I was fortunate because of having Intellectual parents who were very keen on education of their children. My parents couldn’t afford to prepare their children’s educational materials and, therefore, when I was 9 years old I had to work and help my father to finance our family. Although I used to work half a day, I usually had the best results during education.

Since I was in senior high school, I became interested in environmental science and I started to realize the real importance of water from many different aspects in life. All human activities in several fields such as horticulture, agriculture, hydropower generation, water distribution and sanitation facilities and others will run well if they are cited in a good hydraulics framework. This circumstance stimulated me to attend Agriculture- Water engineering at Birjand University.

During that time, I gradually became aware of the practical usage and benefits of this field for my home country, Afghanistan. Therefore, I made my mind and I set my long-term goal as becoming an active specialist engineer in water sector. I studied many technical books and articles about water issues including, hydraulics, hydropower, water supply and modern agricultural technologies. I also took a specialized course on designing under pressure irrigation systems.

As a student at Agriculture faculty of the University, I had numerous opportunities to do. From the seventh semester I became a lecturer assistant in hydraulics and soil laboratory and my responsibilities were teaching and supervising students. I have been very interest in practical experience, so I chose my final graduation project as designing a complete under pressure irrigation system by using AutoCAD and Excel softwares for Gonabad city, in southeast of Iran. That was a big project, but I could manage it by using MSP.

During education at university, I was an active member of Afghanistan Students Union in Birjand. I worked voluntarily for Afghan refugees especially university and high school students. I established a scientific group in the union called Water Engineering Group, to provide information about water resources management regarding water supply and agricultural sectors. I also developed and managed several educational and social activities and organized many workshops about different hydraulic subjects. I gained many experience in leadership and team-working during that time and I could improve my managerial and communicational skills very well.

I came to Afghanistan in 2012 and since then I have been working as Water Resource Engineer in engineering companies. During this time, I have been involved in designing several projects. My professional goal is to work as an active member in water sector, especially in management and development of water resources and irrigation systems in Afghanistan and to implement much more advanced methods and technologies than the current ones.

Although Afghanistan has many rivers and water resources, but unfortunately it is one of the most undeveloped countries in water resources management, treatment and distribution. According to statics from the factsheet published by UNICEF’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in November 2011, only 48% of total population of Afghanistan had access to safe drinking water and only 37% had access to safe sanitation facilities.

I am applying for this master program because it enriches my knowledge on the interdisciplinary fields of water and natural resources management and engineering in different climatic zones. These master programs contain modules like urban water, drinking water supply, water quality and treatment, watershed management and hydro dynamics, which makes it completely relevant to my future goals. Therefore, if I’m accepted, I will have the opportunity to increase my technical knowledge in this field and to better help my country overcoming the problems we have.

During the last several years, I have learned that Germany has become a powerful country for environmental and hydro sciences. Therefore, Germany became one of the best options for me to continue my master degree. I also know Germany as the country in which doing responsibilities in a logical and perfect manner, is a culture among the people, which is really admirable for me. I believe that Germany has many experiences, solutions and visions that can be very beneficial for international students especially from developing countries.

I am currently learning German language and my level is equivalent to A2 and I have planned to get my B2 degree by April 2017. I know that the course is taught in English, but, I want to use my German language skills to make good social relations with people and other students, explore Germany, learn more and more about the German culture, history, society and media and also to find a good part time job related to my studies for obtaining professional experience in Germany, if possible.

I know myself as a hardworking, creative, patient and determined individual with great enthusiasm in learning and studying. I have many aims and goals about water sector of Afghanistan in my mind which I will follow. I do believe in my abilities that I will successfully graduate from this master course and will continue my further studies and programs.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Best regards,
Omolbanin Zakizade
