I have great pleasure in recommending Ms. Ruchi Shah in her pursuit of higher educational qualification – Master’s Degree in the field of Environmental. I have been acquainted with Ruchi for the past two years as a student of Undergraduate studies in Biotechnology at our University.

I have handled a course on Advanced Analytical Techniques in 5^th semester and practical course work in her Undergraduate studies, so I have had an opportunity to assess her abilities. She has performed well in my course is ranked within the top 5% of the students of her class. She has given a presentation on Pulse Field Gel Electrophoresis under my guidance. For this work she was able to research the topic thoroughly and present her work with confidence and flair. She is well versed with Biological Databases such as NCBI,PDB,etc. and has good interpretation skills.

Ruchi has not only excelled in academics, but also has a strong showing in co-curricular activities. She had successfully organized Biotechnology quiz and Debate Competition during college annual festivals. She has actively volunteered in Blood Donation camps and Tree plantation events. She has also represented our college at several Badminton Tournaments. She has been the Class Representative at our college and has been systematic and organized at work. I am writing this letter in support of Ms. Ruchi Shah, who is a student of B.Tech Biotechnology at D. Y. Patil University, Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics. In my capacity as a Professor of the department, I have known her for the past four years and have taken following subjects during her persual of Bachelor’s degree:

1.Industrial Microbiology in 3^rd semester,

2.Microbial Biotechnology in 4^th semester,

3.Application and Advances in Biotechnology in 5^th semester,

4.Environmental Biotechnology in 7^th semester.

During this I got an opportunity to observe her closely and judge her capabilities. She had a quick grasp of the material and took part actively in classroom discussions. Whilst assessing her class assignments on Vermicomposting in 5^th semester and Effects of Salt Stress on Fenugreek in 7^th semester, I observed that she had a propensity for in-depth analysis and a good understanding of the subject. Also she has good grasp over environmental techniques BOD, COD, TOC, DO,etc and has done several trainings and projects in this field.

During her laboratory work, I observed her conscientious and precise work style. Her work was methodical and as per the requirements and set standards. While working in teams in the laboratory she could handle both follower and leader’s roles. She has an ability to think on her feet and capacity to emerge as a leader through consensus. This was observed during her tenure as a Class Representative. I guide those students who present me with a challenging topic requiring independent research and few students at undergraduate level have the tenacity, caliber or passion to do it. I am happy to say that my student Ms. Ruchi Shah is an exception. She is currently pursuing research under my guidance on “Soil Bioremediation using Rhizobium. species”. Her work and dedication to task on hand, her passion for getting to depth of each topic and her work ethic prompt me to mark her as a student that will not only complete her Masters program but will also continue to get a doctoral degree from a world renowned institution.

For her research on the topic, she has so far performed Minimum inhibition control studies to check tolerance of these species to metals including copper, nickel, mercury and others. She has also done RAPD analysis to check species diversity. Her work bears the quality of a thorough professional and at the same time has the veracity of a young and inquisitive mind.

Ms. Shah is one of our most dedicated and focused students. She is set to complete her bachelors program with first class distinction putting her in top 5% of her batch. This is then complemented by her prizes achieved for distinctive performance in Nationwide Biotechnology Olympiads; participation in Technical Paper Presentation at ISAAC 2011; IEEE poster competition; and her services as Class Representative in her final year with us.
