Some teachers think that international student exchange would be beneficial for all teenage school students. Do you think its advantages will outweigh the disadvantages?
It is believed by some teachers that all teenage students will reap the benefits from foreign exchange programmes. From my perspective, although it has some drawbacks, the advantages will have more effects.
There are a number of major disadvantages when students attend international exchange projects. Many support the view that the foreign student exchange programmes will be difficult to reach many students because of its tuition is too high. Students from developing countries may hardly engage in the international exchange projects compared to developed countries due to financial burden. Moreover, students will be exposed to cultural difference, resulting in culture shock. It means that students will face the different customs, they will not completely focus on their learning, consequently misunderstanding, stress and incredible pressure of studying. Besides, many students do not keep up with the international programmes because of their foreign language skills ought to undersirable academic outcomes. For example, students who have poor language skills will fall behind with their studies while others finish the academic courses.
The benefit that such programmes bring to students are significantly far more than the disadvantages. First of all, by engaging in the foreign exchange projects, students not only enhance the English level but also have the opportunities to learn the local languages. For instance, when students join the international student exchange in Germany, of course English is still the language of exchange, but students can also have the chances to learn German, leading to students may know multiple languages. Furthermore, by attending the foreign exchange projects, students can also develop themselves. While in the foreign country, students will face many difficulties or challenges and they must overcome it by themselves, resulting in students will be more independent. Last but not least, compared to peers study in our country, students who join the international exchange programmes will have more practical experiences. Most of students studying abroad have a realistic view of work, confidence, enthusiasm and good discipline, leading to enhance their resume to seek a job more easily.
In conclusion, despite some disadvantages that exchange students may face, I believe that the benefits of the international student exchange programmes do outweigh those drawbacks.
