Essay & Composition Writing

Please review my IELTS writing task 2. Thank you.

In many countries, people like to eat a wider variety of food than can be grown in their local area. As a result, much of the food people eat today has to come from other regions. Do you think the advantages of this development outweigh disadvantages?

---

People nowadays have a tendency to consume a wide range of food which is imported from other regions. While imported food can enrich people’s eating experience, I believe that the drawbacks of this trend are more considerable.

It is true that exotic food from other geographic areas brings enjoyment to consumers. Food imported from far-flung places has different taste, and texture which can make people who are new to it feel excited to try. For example, many Western people enjoy Asian cuisines due to the distinguished flavours which cannot be replicated by the ingredients grown in their countries.

Despite this pleasure, there are disadvantages associated with imported food. First and foremost, the further the place where food is originally produced the more food miles it will take to get to consumers, which lead to more carbon emissions; as a result, it is significantly harmful to the environment. Food imported from other countries, in addition, needs to be preserved for a long time before reaching to end-users so it will be not as fresh and nutritious as the food that is newly harvested, and delivered for a shorter distance within local communities. Imported food is also usually expensive compared to local produce because of the involving costs of preservation and transportation. Thus, buyers have to pay more money for imported food but get less freshness and nutritional values.

In conclusion, although there is a benefit of food sourced from other areas in enhancing experience of eaters, I think the disadvantages far outweigh its advantage.
