Nowadays consumer goods have become the most important part of people’s lives. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?
It is true that consumer goods have been vital components of modern life. While there are some benefits of these goods, I would argue that their downsides are more significant.
One the one hand, consumer durables are advantages in some ways. Firstly, they are deemed to make our lives more convenient and comfortable. For example, owning a car could increase our mobility and independence as we can commute to work more quickly, or go on a drive for holiday more easily. In a similar way, computers with wireless connections allow people to study, or work online, anytime and anywhere. Secondly, some technological products could help to enhance protection and safety for people. For instance, having a mobile phone enables us to contact emergency services immediately for help in critical or dangerous situations.
On the other hand, there are some disadvantages associated with durable goods. One of the significant drawbacks are environmental problems. Natural resources such as oil, gas and wood have been depleted for materials to manufacture these products; as a result, the Earth is crisis of running out of resources. Also, deforestation, and emissions from factories where the goods are manufactured are great contributors to global warming and climate change. In addition, consumerism can be detrimental for people’s healthbecause it encourages people to work for longer hours to earn money to purchase material things. Thus, people spend enormous time working which results in their lack of time for exercise, or lack of quality time spent with their loved ones. This could lead to deterioration in people’s physical and mental health.
In conclusion, although consumer products bring some benefits to people’s lives, I believe that their negative impacts on the environment and people’s health are more considerable.
