Government should spend money on railways rather than roads.
To what extend do you agree or disagree with the statement?
Railways have become one of the most important, commonly used modes of communicating and goods carriage over a long, as well as, short distance. Some people believe that governments should invest more money in it than roads. I completely disagree with this idea for the following reasons.
Rail transport has some disadvantages compared to other types in the eyes of primary passengers. In some countries, most of the residents have their vehicles ( a good example of this approach is Vietnam in which more than 80% of the population own at least one mean of transport), which lead to less use of public transport, especially in urban areas or a short distance. Besides, train stations are located in a permanent position which is sometimes inconvenient for many people living far from these places. Also, there is no denying factor that the price of train tickets is much more expensive than that of buses. It is 33.000 VND for a bus ticket traveling from Ha Noi to Hai Duong province (75km) while using train we have to pay 56.000VND, for instance.
According to economic perspectives, there are some limitations to railways compared to other roads. First, rails are installed permanently so all of the trains have to follow the unchanged directions which leads to the difficulty of transporting goods from one factory to another if their locations can not be in this way. Second, many companies that produce agricultural and fishery products do not choose railways as their mean of transport because carriage by trains takes much time (6-7 days), which can make their goods less fresh or even become rotten, while the expense of railways is not cheaper than other roads. Finally, preparing and packing goods in the containers of trains are complicated and require many workers, which leads to an increase in the expense of this means of transport.
In conclusion, railways bring some benefits but not competitive enough when comparing with roads in many aspects. The government should consider investing money compatibly for each type.
