Cycling is a healthier and more environmentally friendly form of transport. Nevertheless, cycling is getting less popular. What are the reasons of this trend? What can be done to make cycling more popular?

Despite the tangible benefits that cycling brings to cyclists’ health and the environment, it has become less favourable among road users. This development is attributed to the superiority of petrol-powered and electric vehicles and the physical threats posed to cyclists. Several measures can be taken to encourage people to cycle more.

There are compelling reasons for the reducing number of bicycle users. First, the substantially higher speed of motorized transport compared to bicycles is the major cause of this trend. Motorcycles or cars are the better choice for commuting in today’s fast-paced life where people always seek to minimize their travel time. Besides, electric means of transport have been widely adopted by road users, which satisfy both environmental friendliness and speediness demands. Second, cycling is perceived to be more physically dangerous to cyclists. Sharing road spaces with other high-speed and robust vehicles poses a threat to bicycle users’ safety. In fact, in a vehicles collision, they are usually more badly injured than other road users. These underlying grounds have rendered bicycle use scarcer these days.

However, bicycle use can be promoted with several public plans. First, free bicycles can be provided at public spaces like squares or parks to encourage people to cycle more. These safe and spacious shared-use places are perfect venues for cycling. It will gradually gain its popularity among people and will become the choice for a relatively short distance. Second, fortifying road safety is essential to ensure cyclists’ participation in traffic system. Designated lanes for bicycles or laws enacted in favour of their users would guarantee the increase in bicycle use.

In conclusion, the dominance of other means of transport and the risks of shared-use roads are responsible for the reluctance of bicycle users. This situation can be ameliorated by the introduction of free bicycles and road safety policies.
