In many countries, people now wear western clothes such as suits and jeans rather than traditional clothing. Why is this the case? Is this a positive or negative development?

Western fashion has gained its prevalence these days as people in numerous nations eschew indigenous clothes in favour of western items. From my perspective, this is an inevitable result of the extensive integration and there are adverse impacts closely linked with it.

The underlying reason for this growing trend is the widespread fashion integration. In light of globalization, integration in all aspects has been facilitated and fashion is not an exception. Hence, clothing items from popular labels in developed countries, mostly western ones, have been continuously imported to other states, leading to their great availability and massive number that overwhelm the local market. In addition, being superior countries, western countries’ fashion items or styles, are widely considered standards. This results in people favouring them over traditional ones to be more trendy and fashionable.

The preference for western-style clothes entails the loss of a part of cultural identity and the deprivation of creativity in fashion market. Unique costumes have long been considered a precious part of national culture. Provided that people are indifferent to these traditional items, they will gradually fall into disuse. Consequently, this precious part of the indigenous culture will sink into oblivion without being passed on to later generations. Besides, as people adopt the same fashion styles and clothes from foreign countries, namely suits or jeans, there will be no longer demand for novel and creative designs in local markets. Fashion designers’ motivation and job opportunities will, therefore, be undermined. As a result, this tendency runs the risk of hindering fashion sector’s development as a whole.

To sum up, as fashion intertwining is undergoing a proliferation worldwide, it is of great significance for every country to preserve their own distinguishable features reflected in clothing to avoid cultural values loss and promote fashion diversity.
