Topic:
Both men and woman care more about their appearance today than they did in the past. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
My essay:
The adage “Clothes make the man” well explained the necessity of a good appearance in a human’s life and this mindset is becoming more common in modern society as people of both sexes are paying more attention to improve their body image. Personally, I completely agree with this trend.
The first reason why people should take care of their appearance is that it is unique. The image one may project would tell people a lot of things about the person such as lifestyle, personality or ideology. This is why many people want to have a distinctive looking to represent who they are and therefore boost their confidence. Conversely, many people see appearance as a way to seek social acceptance. In other words, these people change their outlooks to fit the social standards and therefore they could build acquaintances. What is more, in certain situations like public speaking, a good appearance could create a great first impression, thus increase the chances of success. For example, the common audiences often find people who are well dressed and have a straight posture more trustworthy. Even in everyday situations, it is well-advised to maintain a good image.
Besides these social aspects, the trend also comes down to multiple economic reasons. First of all, a good appearance could give people better career prospects. If two top applicants were going after a competitive job, big companies would prefer physical appearances if both candidates are highly desirable, as the better-looking person would project the high-class image of the proposed company. What is more, there is a vast array of highly paid jobs for those who pay great attention to their looks, namely stylist, make-up artist or model. Also, physical attractiveness raises social and communication skills, which in turn raise an employee’s productivity and eventually their salary.
In conclusion, that people are paying more attention to their outer look stems from many factors such as seeking social acceptance, adhering to social standards or economic factors like job prospects.
