Please review my IELTS Writing Task 2

News media are important in modern society. Why are they so important? Are their influences generally negative or positive?

It is true that news is an essential part in our current life. Reasons from this vary, while I believe that it creates negative impacts on society.

Firstly, news provides us a great source of information from all over the world. Every day, people can turn on their phones or televisions to update the latest news not only in their areas but also in the other countries. Furthermore, information is renewed every day, so people can keep in touch with the situations timely. Apart from this, news covers various areas, from politics, economy to education, culture. Therefore, people can capture information in every aspect, and expand their horizons about society.

Secondly, news can help people avoid bad things. When news is reported, people can gain knowledge about the situation and know how to keep themselves safe. For example, the weather forecast predicts the possibility of a huge storm happening, so the government and people can have plans to move to safe areas. It is similar to the case of diseases. News can provide people the must-know knowledge about how to prevent from catching diseases.

Although news plays an important role in the society, I believe that it has some negative effects. The first effect is that news only reports one side of the story, not the whole one. For instance, reporters only tell good aspects of the government, while some bad news are covered to save the authorities’ name. Another impact is that news always brings bad news. People have to hear about accidents or the crimes on news every day. This fact may lead to a loss of faith in society.

In conclusion, we cannot deny that news contributes a great part in modern society. However, in some aspects, it still has negative influence on life.
