Many old buildings protected by law are part of a nation's history. Some people think that they should be knocked down and replaced by new ones. How important is it to maintain old building? Should history stand in the way of progress?

>>

The protection of historic buildings by the law is widely discussed nowadays. Some people point out that they should be demolished because they hinder progress, and that new buildings should be replaced instead. However, in my opinion, the preservation of old buildings is extremely important and can even make a nation economically richer.

Firstly, the maintenance of old buildings is highly important because these structures give a country a unique distinction to the world. For example, Vigan, which is an old city with ancient houses that were built over 3 centuries ago, in the Philippines, is recently included in "The New Seven Wonder Cities" by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage Site because of its distinctive Spanish-style of architecture, making the place globally famous. For this reason, it is imperative that such structures should be kept and safeguarded.

Secondly, these ancient buildings, which are considered part of history as they have withstood time, can boost the economy of a country through the creation jobs for the citizens. For instance, the old city of Vigan is being heavily visited by thousands of tourists, both locals and foreigners, daily, thereby generating more income not only for the local government but also for the townspeople. Indeed, history is never considered a hindrance, but rather an instrument in the development of a nation.

In conclusion, all buildings with historical value should never be destroyed, but rather protected and preserved because they give a country a national identity and can uplift its economic status.
