The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main feature and make comparisons where relevant.

The percentage of the population at the age of 65 and older over a 100-year period, starting from 1940 in 3 different regions.

Overall, the proportion of elderly people experiences an upward trend from 1940 to 2040. In addition, Japan has the most significant increase out of the three countries.

When looking at the year 1940, it can be seen that the USA had the highest percent of people over 65 of around 9%. Whereas Sweden and Japan started at just seven percent and exactly 5 percent, consecutively. In 1990, the figure for people who aged over 65 in America and Sweden were equal.

Moving to analyze the data for year 2040, it is clear that the number of elderly Japanese will increase dramatically by 15% from 2030 and will have the highest proportion of the people at the age of 65 ( 27%). While Sweden and America are expected to reach their peak of just over 25% and about 23 percent , respectively.
