Some people say that the main environmental issue of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
The Earth is the only known planet to possess the conditions to sustain life. Although some people believe that these suitable conditions will soon exacerbate due to the loss of certain plant and animal species, there are others who believe there is more to environmental degradation than just the loss of species of animals and plants. I personally believe that there might be additional factors that dictate the problems faced by the environment which is why I would like to categorize myself as the latter.
There are several different factors that come into the picture regarding the matter of environmental degradation. The apparent diminishing amount of plant and animal species is definitely one of them. It is evident that the existence of the variety of plants and animal species on the face of the Earth is crucial. As a matter of fact, a study claimed that if bees became extinct, the Earth would undergo a drastic change in its environmental conditions, so much so that humans will also consequently become extinct. That said, I believe it is also essential to take into consideration a few historical facts.
Historically speaking, there were numerous species that existed on earth that were either lost to extinction or evolution way before humans even came into existence. This clearly refutes the claim and it definitely means that there is more to the deteriorating environment than just the loss of plants and species.
There are several cogent reasons that explain this. The environment has been experiencing an exacerbating effect much after humans were evolved, specifically after the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution sought the detrimental exploitation of nature which led to terrible consequences. This point is captured by one of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s quotes which is, “The earth provides enough to satisfy people’s need not people’s greed”. This means that humans were never meant to exploit nature to generate revenue.
To recapitulate, it is not only the loss of plant and animal species that result in environmental issues but the latent cause of this, which is humankind’s negligence.
