Please review my IELTS task 2 essay

Topic:

With a growing world population, one of the most pressing issues is that of feeding a large number of people. Some people think that gm food offers a viable solution to this problem. To what extent do you agree or disagree.

My essay:

The twenty century has seen a surge in the global population, and with the current 7.7 millions of people, even modern agriculture cannot provide enough food for each individual. Scientists have searched for plausible solutions, and I strongly believe that genetically engineered (GE) foods are one of such. Analyzing the remarkable ability of genetic engineering to produce high-quality and easy-to-grow food as well as the effective control of governments over these food sources will confirm my opinion.

Firstly, GE foods have better quality in nutrients, taste, extreme-weather resistance, shelf life and productivity compared to conventional food. Moreover, they require less natural resources for production. These desirable traits are implanted from one particular plant or animal, and these foods generate offspring innately having these traits. For example, in Ha Giang city, the cradle of Vietnamese Agriculture, GE rice that has three times more iron and vitamins than natural rice is now cultivated in some crops. The government predicts that this production may alleviate chronic malnutrition occurred in poor cities.

Secondly, many organizations that work for the government assess the new GE foods, ensuring they are safe before being sold. Some of the novel examples are The US Food and Drug Administration, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). Looking at their examinations, the possible risks to the human body and environment have yet to be found in any bioengineered organisms sold in the markets. Thus, we can see that genetic modification is a feasible way to solve world hunger.

In conclusion, with such enormous potential benefits of increasing top-quality crop yield, along with strict safety controls from governments, I completely agree that genetic engineering is the inevitable development for future agriculture. Paltry consumption of food can be improved via this advanced technology.
