MY ESSAY:
Compared to our past century, there are sweeping changes in modern diets, including both the quantity and quality of food. However, I strongly believe our present diets have not changed for the better, but at the expense of our health. This will be proven by looking at the less diversity in everyday ingredients and the overconsumption of unhealthy food.
Firstly, despite the advent of transportation systems which allows us to have food that is not in season or impossible to grow in our local, the costly price of the healthy food and the intensive farming for just a small variety of food, drive us to a rather narrow range of ingredients. The evidence can be seen in the US, where their daily meal almost only includes three types of plants - corn, wheat and rice- and five kinds of meat, such as pork, chicken and beef. This trend causes an odd way of malnutrition, in that we lack a lot of essential nutrients found in vegetables.
Secondly, the ability to produce far more food than the immediate need allows the extra food turned into canned, bottled, frozen or fast food. Indeed, the convenience of these prepared items makes housewives and young adults, fully occupied by their job and study, consume them. However, this value-added food is highly rich in sugar, fat, salt and meat, whose excessive consumption significantly increases the risks of many diseases - overweight, obesity and heart diseases. This pattern is exemplified by the increasing prevalence of these lifestyle-related diseases that is already a major concern in developed countries and recently foreseen in developed nations.
In conclusion, the shift to current industrial diets leads to both malnutrition and many diseases related to bad food addiction. Sadly, in the interest of convenience, we are sacrificing our well-being.
