Most people have forgotten the meaning behind traditional or religious festivals; during festival periods, people nowadays only want to enjoy themselves.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Many people these days mainly seek to entertain themselves during the periods of traditional or religious festivals rather than remembering the meaning behind these celebrations. I only agree with this to a moderate extent. Although certain individuals value enjoyment during festivals, many others still practice traditional customs to not forget the meaning of festive occasions.

People seem to pay little attention to the significance of traditional and religious festivals. This tendency mainly occurs among the young generation, who mostly regard festivals as entertaining periods. Prominent examples to support this view would be the Lunar New Year and Christmas. During such events, numerous young people do not practice traditions such as worshipping their ancestors at home, going to churches, or reunifying with families. Conversely, they go on vacations with friends to tourist attractions or go on dates at cafes or restaurants to socialize and relax after a hard-working year.

Nevertheless, a substantial proportion of the young population, and most of the middle-aged and elderly still remember the meaning of festivals. For example, the Vietnamese are reminded annually that Tet is a period of reuniting with families and praying for good luck in the new Lunar year. In some houses, parents also tell their children their past stories and myths associated with Tet and teach them how to prepare altars to welcome gods into their houses or worship ancestors. At Christmas, it is common for people to go to churches to listen to biblical stories about Jesus, which are narrated by the priests, and practice ceremonies to constantly be aware of what Christmas symbolizes.

In conclusion, I do not totally agree with the proposed opinion. Although some people prioritize recreation during festivals, the rest continue practicing long-upheld customs so that they could long remember the significance of both traditional and religious celebrations.
