Around the world, many adults are working from home, and more children are beginning to study from home because technology has become cheaper and more accessible.
Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Working and studying from home are no longer a thing of the past thanks to the spread of technology, which is now more affordable and easy to access. However, in my opinion, the adoption of technology for this aspect has resulted in plentiful problems for the society. For that reason, I believe that this is a negative development.
Staying at home to work and study can cause distraction, which deters or hinders one's productivity and result. Being in a formal environment like a school or an office, surrounded by peers give the student or employee the motivation to stay focused on their progress as well as promoting competitiveness to outperform each other. For example, students taking online courses may play games instead of paying attention to their study when they are under no supervision from teachers.
Moreover, working in groups is not always effective when it is taken place via the Internet, calls or texts. Discussion is of significance when it comes to working in groups, and face-to-face communication is the most efficient way to boost the progress. Also, there are projects that can not be done without working with partners in person. For example, when students are given the task to make a model of a building, it is without doubt that the project can not be finished if they work separately.
In conclusion, the technology has brought about opportunities to work and study at home. However, the trend has its drawbacks and causes problems to the effectiveness and teamwork of students and workers. It is, therefore, a negative development to the society that is growing intensively.
