Topic: People think that government should increase the cost of fuel for cars and other vehicles to solve environmental problems. Give your opinion.
It is true that waste emissions from cars and other means of transportation are increasing nowadays, which leads to environmental degradation as well as global warming. While I accepted that the cost of fuel for vehicles should be increased to alleviate environmental problems, I would argue that more effective solutions can also be implemented to have greater impact.
On the one hand, there are several reasons why the fuel cost should be increased. First of all, this will lead to the reduction of the numbers of private cars and motorbikes. Obviously, people would use more public transportations to lower travelling expenses, which helps to cut down on emissions. Secondly, the governments will have more taxes, which provide more funding for environmental projects and campaigns. For example, the developing countries could have enough funds to conduct related researches with foreign experts and understand international practical in fighting climate change.
On the other hand, other solutions which bring long term results should be adopted. The governments could invest in enhancing the quality and the quantity of public transportation. For instance, there should be more spaces in buses for the disables and stop stations would be placed more logical. As a result, it promotes the use of buses and trams, which helps to reduce not only environmental degradation but also congestion. Another measure would be to encourage environmental friendly transportations which can consume renewable energy and discharge less toxic waste such as electricity cars and bikes. Particularly, electricity cars are used more and more in many countries, which helps to reduce carbon footprint and the dependence on petrol. Moreover they also emit fewer greenhouse gases and air pollutants than petrol or diesel cars.
In conclusion, a rise in petrol prices would be a useful environmentally-friendly transport measure, although in the longer term other steps mentioned above would be more effective.
