Task 2: Some people think that cultural traditions may be destroyed when they are used as money-making attractions aimed at tourists. Others believe it is the only way to save these traditions. Discuss on both sides and give your opinion.
Throughout history, traditions have been used as vehicles to make money, which may deteriorate these traditions, but many people consider that only by making money from traditions can we preserve them. From my point of view, the destruction of traditions is not entirely attributed to tourism and it plays a key role in saving these precious values.
Admittedly, a number of aspects of traditions may be badly affected due to tourist activities. This can be easily perceived in the shift from obsolete traditions to new trends, the increase in the frequency at which a tradition is performed, nay the disappearance of traditions for the sake of profits. However, every government has its own corresponding policies; therefore, such problems are basically caused by maladroit local governments which do not have the capacity of foreseeing the certain influence of new trends on historic traditions. Thus, the degradation of old traditions can still be prevented if local governments adopt appropriate policies.
Therefore, I am convinced that the only panacea for preserving traditions may be obtaining profits from them as these monetary gains may act as incentives for people to maintain traditions. One might argue that the income from traditions may be unnecessary because governments are responsible to pay subsidies for the protection of traditions, but this is not sound because it is too extravagant for governments just to save traditions. Only by earning profits can residents develop the national economy, which may be used to organize festivals with a view to raising awareness of their importance. Hence, without profits from traditions, this solution is impossible.
In conclusion, earning profits from traditions is not the direct cause of the destruction of traditional practices, provided that governments ' policies are strong and thorough enough to prevent detrimental impacts of tourist activities. Therefore, it is vital to acknowledge the importance of placing traditions at the core of what attracts tourists
