Many small, local shops are closing since they are unable to compete with large supermarkets in the area. How does this affect local communities? How could this situation be improved?

In recent years, big-box retailers have never stopped growing in popularity around the world, causing some public controversy. Given that this phenomenon brings about certain community impacts, various measures could be applied to mitigate the problem.

The prevalence of large-scale retailers has adversely affected the local communities in various ways. First, many large supermarkets are located in urban centers, which comes at an expense of many far-away communities, especially those in rural areas. In fact, traveling to these shopping malls requires rural residents to drive long distances, costing them unnecessary time and efforts. In addition, as economies of scale come into play, these malls can offer customers with great variety of merchandises at fair prices, making it a challenge for small retailers. As a result, smaller shops might lose their customers, leading to poorer sales performance or even closedown.

However, there are various steps individuals and governments can take to tackle the issue. First, authorities can offer financial-aid to many local stores, which encourages them to expand their market. This ensures that shop owners will be highly motivated to sustain and enhance their business, bringing many positive changes to the community. Besides, by doing online business, local retailers can greatly benefit from digital marketing. For instance, online advertisements on their websites could attract a wider range of digital customers, thereby gaining them greater sales revenues.

In conclusion, even though many local communities and stores are suffering from the influence of large-scale supermarkets, there are not without solutions. The governments and individuals should take preventive steps to best advance the interests of community members.
