A glance at the supplied visual depicts several fundamental constituents that form a nerve cell and simultaneously, illustrating in which way neurons operate.

Collectively, healthy neurons comprise of six different pieces. Scientifically speaking, nerve cells seem to function identically to conventional electric wire, which sends out electric currents to signalize other cells to react accordingly.

Digging deeper, in the heart of the cell lies the soma, also known as the cell body, whose job is to synthesize protein for cells . Surrounding the soma is a matrix of dendrites, which branch further from the cell to contact with other synapses. As information is received via those dendrites, it gets converted into electrical impulses which subsequently travel through the soma and propagate through the axon to reach its assigned destination.

Shielded the axon is a chain of capsule-shaped, highly insulated substances called myelin, situated along the side of which. Upon passing the first myelin sheath, electrical impulses leapfrog from node-to-node repeatedly and in terms, its speed expedite substantially. As those impulses reach the end of the axon, all of which are transmuted back into neurotransmitters at the nerve terminal, where they will traverse the synapses to reach other cells.
