The line graph illustrates how much renewable power was used in 6 countries over a forty-year period starting from 1971.

Overall, there was an increase in the share of renewable energy consumption in Denmark, France, Germany, the US, and the UK, with the United States witnessing the most dramatic rise, while a decline was seen in Finland. However, Finland consistently had the highest figure throughout the period.

About 1% of the total energy consumption was from renewable sources in the United Kingdom in the first year, with a levelling off from 1971 to 1976 and a final gradual increase to 7% in 2011. Similar changes, but to greater extents, can be seen in the figure for the United States, which sharply increased from 3% in 1971 to reach the peak of 18% in the last year of the period, despite some fluctuations.

The proportion of renewable energy used in Finland and Denmark decreased from about 24% and 15% in 1971 to 16% and 10% in 1986, followed by a final growth to approximate 24% and 17% 25 years later. Meanwhile, the figures for France and Germany fluctuated slightly at 10% and 5% until 1991 and increased to just under 15% and 13% in 2011 respectively.
