Some people believe that it is more important to teach children the literature of their own country than other countries. Do you agree or disagree?

Learning literature is critical for children in forming personal traits, ideals, and attitudes towards life. That is why some argue that children should focus on their domestic literature rather than international ones. While I accept that children will gain a range of benefits when studying literature works of their own culture, I also believe that learning foreign literature is equally important.

To begin with, learning domestic literally works brings a lot of benefits for both children and their parents. First, children will enjoy learning about the culture familiar to them, and by studying the ideas, history, and tradition of their own countries, they begin to develop a sense of identity. Moreover, this approach is appealing to parents, who studied the same books and historical events and can therefore help their children with school work. Last but not least, any exposure to international literature is likely to require the teaching of a foreign language or the use of translations. Therefore, children under a certain age are not ready for such complications.

However, international literature also has positive influences on children. First, literature is much more than a subject, it presents culture as well as holds knowledge accumulated for centuries. Furthermore, the trend towards globalization means that each and every individual should learn to accept and appreciate the history, traditions, and customs of exotic countries, and teaching foreign literature is a perfect way to arm children with such information. Last, by learning literature from both local and foreign resources, children would be able to think from different perspectives when encountering a problem. This helps develop better decision-making and problem-solving skills.

In conclusion, for the reasons mentioned above, I personally believe that it is necessary for children to learn both local and foreign literature.
