Some people think that cultural traditions may be destroyed when they are money-making traditions aimed at tourists. Others, however, believe that it is the only way to save these traditions. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

A number of people propose that capitalizing on cultural customs for financial benefits through tourism runs a higher risk of devastating it, while others believe that is the optimal method to conserve these traditions. In this answer, I will discuss the rationales behind two views before showing why I favor the latter.

On the one hand, commercialized cross-cultural tourism is likely to ruin one unique tradition. First of all, instead of letting the tourists respect and admire a culture from a distance, people in the hosting nations impose countless tourists into the traditions and start turning ancient customs into a product for sale which severely undermines the culture. For instance, some tourists’ destinations in East Asia have had to transform their cuisines and services to satisfy the Western taste. Through gradual process of changes, there might not be any semblance of the old tradition, this action demonstrates their loss of authenticity in order to pull travelers towards them in the first place. Mass tourism, moreover, poses a threat to the conservation of heritage sites. Sightseers, with or without motives, are able to cause degradation to cultural tangible exhibits, especially in tourist-heavy places of interest. Take Thailand as an illustration, this country, where the religion takes the lead is Buddhism, is renowned for sacred temples and pagodas and appeals to a hordes of tourists. It takes its toll due to the vandalism, a structure cannot see that many people without experiencing wear and tear.

On the other hand, the proliferation of travelers could contribute to the maintenance of existing customs. One reason for this is that it plays a pivotal role in boosting the revenue. It is a fact that tourism is the backbone of the economy in numerous countries, it helps mitigate unemployment, and the number of occupations related to tourism is significant. As a result, there is no doubt that it is lucrative for entrepreneurs, eventually, the more profits they gain, the more taxes are paid to the authorities. This means the local government takes opportunities to spend revenue on key fields, upgrading the facilities and allocating more funds in improving the traditions that are advantageous for saving customs, such as the long-standing traditional crafts on the verge of extinction requiring subsidies to retain. Another strong reason is that traveling outside the confines of residential borders plants a sense of cultural exchange between foreigners and locals. It fosters cross-cultural appreciation as culture is the driving force of the growth of tourism, it establishes a link between two cultures; therefore, shape in-depth insights for the travelers to understand the characteristic of another. For example, Europeans when taking a trip to Asia can immerse in local life, enjoy the exotic culinary delights, explore a distinct lifestyle and broaden horizons about a different continent.

In conclusion, being in ruins is a downside that profitable tourism exerts on traditional figures. However, I suppose that it is more appropriate to deem this pressing problem as an alarming signal to seek for viable approaches to resolve the problem.
