Topic: Research suggests that the majority of criminals who are sent to prison commit crimes when set free. What are the reasons? What can be done to solve the problem?

My essay:

It is true that offenders still tend to disobey the laws when they get out of jail. There are known rationales to explain this phenomenon and steps should be taken to remedy this issue.

Criminals are prone to recommit crimes due to two main factors. First, it is highly likely that offenders turn to a career of crime in the first place because they cannot make a living and are unable to pay the bills. Things seem not to change after they serve their time in prison, which means they still do not have the knowledge and skills to support themselves and their families. Second, research shows that criminals find it hard to integral back to communities due to society’s prejudice. Business owners avoid hiring those who have criminal records while coworkers are sometimes considered hostile, making former offenders feel left out.

This dilemma could be tackled using several solutions. One of the solutions is that vocational programs should be organized in prison, enabling criminals to have skills that could help them find a job when they are back in society. Another thing that could be done is that when in prison, criminals should be treated with respect despite what they have done in the past. Guards in a prison in Cuba, for example, call prisoners by their names and give them their own cell key. On top of this, if society welcomes offenders with open arms when they are set free, it would be a huge motivation for them to rebuild their life.

In conclusion, the fact that the rate of recommitting crimes is high can be explained by two main reasons and can be tackled if prison authorities and societies work with each other.
