Essay & Composition Writing

Please review my IELTS essay task 2. Thank you!

Topic: For school children, their teachers have more influence on their intelligence and social development than their parents. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

My essay:

Some people agree with the notion that pupils are more influenced by their teachers than by their parents in terms of intelligence and social development. Although I acknowledge that teachers may spend more active time with children, it seems to me that parents also play a vital role in the development of children.

On the one hand, it is evident that teachers are the main people who responsible for imparting knowledge to children, consisting of a variety range of subjects from math, literature, art, etc. This knowledge forms the foundation for future academic achievement. Another way that teachers can influence children’s behavior is how they manage conflicts between pupils, which happens quite often in schools. If two pupils got into a fight with each other, for example, teachers would be the first mediator who explains the rights and wrongs and guide their behavior.

On the other hand, I would argue that although parents spend less time with children compared with teachers, they affect children in different aspects and to some extent, in a more meaningful way. Firstly, it is said that be the best way to teach children is to become a role model for them. Children look up to their parents and come to them to either cry for or seek some kind of guidance whenever something comes up. This is where parents shape their children’s personality by talking to them individually and personally. Secondly, the development of a child can also be affected through family activities such as going on holiday or visiting relatives. Those who have more chance to expose to different social situations tend to be more confident than others at the same age who do not have many opportunities to go out often.

In conclusion, I believe that teachers and parents play an important yet distinct role in the development of children.

Thank you in advance for your time!
